our autodesk university experience!

William Burks was lucky to attend Autodesk University in Las Vegas this year. From November 30th through December 4th he was attending intensive training workshop and lectures concerning digital design. He was also fortunate enough to see some new technologies and participate in some beta programs that revealed the future of digital design using Autodesk products.

autocad modeling commands

There are many ways to create 3D solids in AutoCAD. Some of these ways might be more fitting for a specific concept of yours. This video covers four primary methods for making 3D objects out of 2D objects. They begin with some sketches of a plan and two sections that might lend themselves to specific operations for creating solids. I hope this inspires as well as instructs you.

3ds max combining models

In this tutorial we will show you how to combine models into 3DS Max via file import and position them for an initial rendering.  We will walk you through the importing process from AutoCAD; then moving models in Max to position them for a rendering, and lastly the beginnings of the rendering process in 3DS Max.  We will show you have to set up cameras, lighting, and the render engine to achieve a very basic "grey mass rendering."  We will follow up with this lesson on how to create specific materials and scenes in Max for more comprehensive images.

bentley generativecomponents

"Generative Components is an associative and parametric modeling system used by architects and engineers to automate the design processes and accelerate design iterations. It gives designers and engineers new ways to efficiently explore alternative building forms without manually building the detail design model for each scenario. It also increases their efficiency in managing conventional design and documentation."

"GenerativeComponents captures and graphically presents both design components and abstract relationships between them. This capability lets GenerativeComponents go beyond making geometry explicit; it makes design intent explicit as well. Although designers are working graphically, based on intuition and experience in architectural design, their work is captured in logical form."

autocad modeling buildings

In this tutorial we show you how to pull files together to effectively model buildings in AutoCAD. We will show you how to import images and use them as the basis for your solid geometry. We will post other videos on how to use AutoCAD to model buildings where the end product is unknown as well to complete the knowledge base.

We will also follow up with this video showing how to import the model into 3DS Max for rendering purposes.

autocad plot styles

In this tutorial we will cover how to create plot styles from scratch in AutoCAD. We will cover the basics of creating a plot style based on colors that have a preset line weight assigned to them. We will create the plot style and show how to assign a line weight to a line color. We also will show how to create layers with these colors assigned to them and apply them to the drawing.

After watching this tutorial you will be able to create your own custom plot styles and edit them as needed for both presentation drawings as well as construction drawings.

book review architectural geometry

"Geometry lies at the core of the architectural design process. It is omnipresent, from the initial form-finding stages to the actual construction. Modern constructive geometry provides a variety of tools for the efficient design, analysis, and manufacture of complex shapes. This results in new challenges for architecture. However, the architectural application also poses new problems to geometry. Architectural geometry is therefore an entire research area, currently emerging at the border between applied geometry and architecture."

"This book has been written as a textbook for students of architecture or industrial design. It comprises material at all levels, from the basics of geometric modeling to the cutting edge of research. During the architectural journey through geometry, topics typically reserved for a mathematically well-trained audience are addressed in an easily understandable way. These include central concepts on freeform curves and surfaces, differential geometry, kinematic geometry, mesh processing, digital reconstruction, and optimization of shapes. This book is also intended as a geometry consultant for architects, construction engineers, and industrial designers and as a source of inspiration for scientists interested in applications of geometry processing in architecture and art."

3ds max topo creation

In this video we will cover how to take topography models you have created in other programs and manipulate them. We will use various tools (soft selection, edit poly, loops) to manipulate the site with the intention of 3D printing or milling the end result.

This process will give you the ability to iterate quickly through design decisions for the site and actually see the end result of these decisions in physical form. It is important to use this technology to its fullest extent, by bringing the models to a tangible result. While the computer for model visualization is a very useful tool, seeing a model in its physical form is that much more potent when explaining a design.

video schedule!

We finally have a schedule so you know when we are going to update things! Events, projects, and tirades will be posted as they arrive so there really is no schedule for them.

Maker Monday:

We will post a video that involves making "things" from the computer. i.e. laser cutter, CNC, 3D printing

2D Tuesday:

We will post a video that involves 2D software.

Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign.

Workless Wednesday:

We dont work, so leave us alone...

3D Thursday:

We will post a video that involves 3D software, like Max, Rhino, GC, CAD, SketchUp...

Free for all Friday:

We post what we want, so deal with it...

You don't work on the weekends so why should we?

beta search:

If you are looking for something specific in the site then try our search feature, but be warned it is in the beta stage. So, be prepared for some weird results. That is our official disclaimer, so you can't complain if it doesn't work the way you want it to.

suggestions?

Is there a specific program that you use as an architect that we dont have on this site? Is there a process that you know of that is superior to one we showed in one of our videos. If yes then drop us a line here at our suggestions page.
